The low down on Essential Oils

What are essential oils?

Essential oils are powerful substances that can help you every day in so many different ways. They are naturally occurring oils that are created by distilling plants to capture their fragrance. You may have heard about them being used in perfumes, diffusers and rollers for healing or other purposes.

People have been creating and using oils for thousands of years and often use them as an alternative to the many synthetic products available today.

What can they be used for?

Essential oils have so many uses and can be substituted into many aspects of your daily life.

Essential oils can aid in your health and wellbeing by improving your mood, giving you a better quality sleep, boosting your immunity and reducing headaches, nausea and inflammation. They can also be used to assist with things like helping you breath better, assisting with digestion and gut health and improving skin, hair and teeth. And these are just a few ways that can be a part of your ongoing wellness journey.

Oils can also be used as a replacement for many soaps and are also a wonderful way to clean your home. Some oils are so powerful they can kill bacteria, fungus and viruses and are great for cleaning around the house.

Anyone and everyone can use essential oils, however if you are worried about using them or are pregnant/breastfeeding, please speak to your doctor beforehand.

How are essential oils made?

Plants are steamed with high heat or compressed to extract the oil. This is then stored in a liquid state and the aroma is released when you open the bottle. Depending on the oil, it can sometimes take a large amount of a plant to produce a small about of oil.

When using an oil, it is important to ensure the oil is as pure as possible. Purity and quality is determined by a number of factors including the quality of the plant seeds, the soil a plant is grown in, rainfall, temperature and the extraction process. Some lower quality oils also have synthetic additives included, so do your research carefully.

How do I use oils?

Depending on what the oil is being used for, it can be utilised in a number of ways. Some oils work well in a diffuser where the aroma is released into the air for such things as to aid in breathing or to reduce headaches, and other oils are applied topically to the skin. On occasion oils can be used internally, however it is important to speak with a health care professional before you do this.

How should you store essential oils?

Essential oils should be stored at room temperature away from direct sunlight. The composition of essential oils can change over time so it is recommended to replace them every couple of years.

Things to be aware of

As with anything you buy it is important to understand the product you are using. Do your research and read the labels. Make sure you are getting a pure high quality oil with no additives.

When using an oil topically be sure to check whether or not it should be used in a carrier oil and do a patch test on your skin first before using liberally. Do not apply to sensitive areas of irritated skin. Some oils also have a sun warning.

Always pay attention to your body’s reaction when using essential oils. Your body will tell you everything you need to know.

Always keep out of reach of children.
